Michael Stuart McGurk, 31, pleaded guilty to driving whilst over the limit when he appeared at Lancaster Magistrates Court.

The court heard that it was just before midnight on August 8 when officers parked at the junction of Combermere Road and Trumacar Lane saw a vehicle drive onto the bypass with front and rear fog lights on despite it being a clear evening.

The silver Mazda Premacy was stopped and it was apparent the driver smelt of alcohol.

A roadside breath test revealed McGurk was over twice the legal drink drive limit.

He told police: "I know I'm going to be over, I've had a drink."

Defending, Jonathan Jack-son told the court that McGurk lives in Blackburn and was on holiday at a caravan park with his wife and four children.

"He had a row with his wife, got into his car and drove off."

Magistrates disqualified McGurk, of Gloucester Road, Blackburn, for 18 months and fined him £100.

He was also ordered to pay court costs of £60 and a £15 victim surcharge.
